Introduction
to Fontemorsi winery at Montescudaio
Immersed in the Tuscan countryside near Montescudaio between the sea
and Volterra, Fontemorsi is the synthesis of all the natural beauties
that only Tuscany can deliver. In this area, with a tradition in wine
production that goes back to the days of the Etruscans, Fontemorsi
has developed a small product line of organic wines and olive oil.
The organic choice
The
majority of the winery’s 23 hectares are occupied by our vineyards and
olive groves. Our winery is located in an area which is ideal for both
grape and olive production. The structure of our soils as well as the
particular microclimate (which is quite different from the coast or
the lower Maremma) are ideal for wine production and allow for healthy
ripe grapes without the use of chemical fertilizing of treatments. This excellent microclimate with cool soils allows our grapes to ripen perfectly even in the hottest of summers. The high mineral content of our soils testified by the vast quantities of fossil sea shells, the vinification of only our grapes and the control over all production phases are all factors that confirm the company’s decision to produce organically which, over and above the value from an environmental and health point of view, allows our wines to express the best of our terroir. In 2008, after a successful trial period Fontemorsi has agreed to manage the winery in accordance with Reg. Cee 2092/91 certified by the Italian Association for Organic Agriculture. We are assisted in this project by Dr. Ruggero Mazzilli manager of the Experimental Station for Sustainable Viticulture which has strong ties with both the University of Pisa and Florence.
The brand
In order to underscore the tie between Fontemorsi and it’s territory the company logo is a fossil shell as those that you can find daily in our vineyards. The Wines
Tuscan tradition and constant search for the best quality are the key words that define the production of Fontemorsi with approximately 50,000 bottles of red, rosè and white wines split up in 5 labels: the reds Spazzavento DOC, Guadipiani IGT and Volterrano IGT, the rosè Rosato di Fongemorsi IGT and the white Tresassi IGT.The choice of the varieties to plant has been determined by a careful analysis of the existing vineyards and the characteristics of both soil and microclimate. On this basis we have decided to continue with the traditional varieties of our territory and have planted a majority of Sangiovese with some Canaiolo and red Malvasia along with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. All the attention paid during the cultivation of the grapes continues also during wine production thanks to our modern wine making equipment.
Fontemorsi’s wines are reviewed by the most important Italian guides such as Veronelli, Espresso, Luca Maroni, AIS Bibenda 2000 vini with good comments and increasingly higher scores.
Organic extravirgin olive oil IGP
Fontemorsi’s
olive oil is certified as organic Extra virgin IGP. It is obtained from
a cuvèe of four varieties (Frantoio, Maurino, Leccino e Pendolino) hand
picked and pressed daily. Thanks to this our oil has extremely low parameters
of acidity and oxidation. Our oil has received numerous acknowledgements
among which in 2004 4 drops on the authoritative Italian guide to Olive
oil published by the Italian Oil Sommelier Association.Fontemorsi is part of the Montescudaio DOC Consortium, Strada del Vino Costa degli Etruschi and Movimento Turismo del Vino.
The winery itself has modern wine-making equipment, using either steel or oak in the fermentation process. At the centre of the ancient village of Montescudaio, Fontemorsi has its own wine bar and shop for direct sales to the public.
